Kaka: I've got God on my side

By MARK IRWIN
May 21, 2007

HE has destroyed Manchester United — now Kaka has Liverpool in his sights this week.
Yet the young Brazilian feared he would never play again after breaking his neck in a freak swimming pool accident.

Now the AC Milan playmaker, 25, reveals in detail for the first time how he fought his way back from near tragedy.

And he admits lifting the European Cup on Wednesday would be the fulfilment of his ultimate goal after achieving the 10 targets he set himself when disaster struck seven years ago.

Kaka’s mesmerising two-goal performance at Old Trafford last month set Milan on their way to a 5-3 aggregate victory over United in their Champions League semi-final.

The deeply-religious Brazilian believes it was God’s will which gave him the strength to fire the Italian giants to this week’s Athens final.

Yet Kaka will never forget the day his career was almost destroyed before it had really begun.

He recalled: “In October 2000, I was at my grandfather’s house in a small town in Brazil called Caldas Novas.

“I was sliding into his swimming pool but fell awkwardly and hit my head on the bottom of the pool.

“I twisted my neck but did not realise at the time that I had broken my sixth cervical bone.

“I went back to my club, Sao Paulo, the following day and actually trained for a couple of days. But I was in such pain the club eventually sent me to hospital for tests.

“The doctor was asking me whether my limbs were feeling numb and I told him I was OK.

“It was only then he revealed the serious nature of my injury.

“He was trying not to frighten me but admitted I was very lucky to have been able to train for two days with a broken neck and not suffer permanent damage.

“All I knew since a kid was that anyone with a broken neck would be disabled for life so my immediate question was would I ever be able to play football again?

“The doctor told me I would not be able to play for at least three months and I would have to wear a cervical collar all that time.

“Then they would be able to tell if I was going to fully recover.

“But after two months, the injury had healed and I was able to resume my football career.

“That was when I knew God was looking after me and that He was on my side.

“I was born a Christian, read the Bible and always placed my faith in God and Jesus. During my injury, many fears crossed my mind. Reading the Bible and praying were the things that really helped me through those dark moments.

“I had several extraordinary experiences with God which made me feel confident I would eventually be able to play football again.

“Now I believe faith helped me through. I knew God had a purpose for me and my life.”

Kaka revealed it was when his future was in the balance that he set 10 targets for his comeback.

The first was simply to kick a football again, the second to resume his professional career with Sao Paulo ranging through to playing in the World Cup finals for Brazil and moving to a major club in Europe.

Kaka admitted: “Now I have an 11th target and that is to win the Champions League.”

Kaka is now in his fourth year at Milan following a £5million move in 2003. He explained: “I chose Milan because in Sao Paulo I played alongside Leonardo for six months and he was constantly outlining how great the club was.

“I was very young when I planned out my career and everything so far has worked as I hoped it might.”

Everything, that is, apart from his last meeting with Liverpool in the 2005 European Cup final in Istanbul.

He admitted: “No one expected what happened but in football you can never be sure of anything.

“Two years have passed since Istanbul and I honestly don’t think about it any more.

“Liverpool played a great final and deserved to win the title. Now we have another chance to write our name on the trophy.

“Nobody in Milan is thinking about revenge. We are just happy to be in the final again.

“We know what Liverpool are capable of. They are an excellent squad, disciplined and well organised. You can see what a great job their coach has done.

“Liverpool’s strength is they are used to playing the big games. They never give up. They have already beaten Barcelona and Chelsea so we know they are a dangerous opponent.

“But we have taken a great deal of confidence from our semi-final win over Manchester United.”

Kaka has been linked to a swap with Chelsea’s Andriy Shevchenko.

Yet the Brazilian insisted: “The Premiership is an exciting league but I have a contract at Milan until 2011 and I am very happy where I am.”

THE SEED

A successful Christian business man was growing old and knew it was time to chose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his directors or his children, he decided to do something different.

He called all the young executives in his company together.

"It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO," he said. "I have decided to choose one of you."

The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each one of you a seed today - a very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed.
He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.

Every day, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by - still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however. He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - he so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened.

Jim felt sick at his stomach. It was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.

He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful--in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed. A few felt sorry for him!
When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.
Jim just tried to hide in the back.

"My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the CEO.

"Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the financial director to bring him to the front.

Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!"
When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed. Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Here is your next Chief Executive! His name is Jim!"

Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed. How could he be the new CEO the others said?

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow. All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive!"

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.

If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.

If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.

If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective.

If you plant hard work, you will reap success.

If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

If you plant faith in Christ, you will reap a harvest.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.

Two thousand years ago Paul wrote to the church at Galatia the same story but with fewer words, "What you sow, so shall you reap" (Gal. 6:7).

We are grass that will wither and die but the incorruptible seed of God's Word will live forever - sow it daily into the life of your family! (1 Peter 1: 23 - 25).

May we cherish and be thankful for whatever God has done, is doing and going to do in every single one of us. Be focus on Him and His Words for He is the almighty and most amazing Creator of all things in the universe.

Hallelujah!

First, David’s alarm went off, then mine. As I trudged out of bed, the time was 250am, 03 May 2007.

I thought it was gonna be an unforgettable night… IT WAS!

Champions League Semi - AC Milan host Manchester Utd at San Siro.
With the tie delicately balanced, and Manchester leading 3 goals to 2, it was set to be an exciting night.

Manchester Utd is looking to emulate the class of 1999, they are in the Champions League semi-final once again. In the quarterfinals, they had sensationally destroyed AS Roma at OT (7-1), albeit narrowly losing away in Rome 2-1.

Expectant Manchester fans must have been relishing the chance of a repeat of the 1999 euro cup glory.

And we do have quite a few such Manchester fans amidst our team. An almost unholy force pulled us all to watch this match. I (MU fan) stayed over at David’s (Arsenal supporter) house. While still unknown to the both of us, people like (All MU fan) Joey, Lester, Kenneth and Johann already gathered at the commonwealth MacDonald.

Then it happened.

Kaka scored from a wonderful volley on 11th minutes. The pressure is now on United. They HAVE to score, or else they will be out. I was relatively calm, knowing that there is still 80mins left to play.

But David had begun spurting nonsense and worse, nonstop. So much that even her sister begin laughing and tried to calm him.

Then it happened, AGAIN.

C. Seedorf scored from a similar position again. Bloody David is on rampage now. He really lost it. He started calling Lester and found the whole group at the MacDonald.
So we went down and watched the wretched 2nd half, where United best answer to Milan was a Fletcher slice-shot, one that almost any teamr-age player could do better. And then the final goal from Milan, and United was truly dead and buried.

But the Bloody David had just begun; he tormented all of us with his almost hysterical and sarcastic “consolations”. He was met with mostly “Shut Up”s. And I am truly amazed with his level of hatred, as after the group left and I went back to his home for the night, he was so “high”, that he kinda denied me sleeping, in order to hear him “consol” me.

haha.

ok lah, to be fair, he wasn’t that bloody, but quite. And I just wanted to pen this down as this is the first time I watch soccer with my teammates.

And it was filled with good and not so good (thanks har David! =P) memories. Just enough to remember, otherwise a forgettable night…

Our FIRST match of 2007!!!

dearest team,

first and foremost, well done.
i am extremely proud of you.
and i am even prouder to be the captain of such a unique team - we really have come a looong way.
we have finally broken the curse of the blue jersey, and in style.

4-0 was a fair score and a good reflection of the game.
they had less than 3-4 shots on target and we were dominating possession and the pace of the game.
i'm also delighted we kept the clean sheet because it shows our defence's great job today.
well done to jacob for getting 2 excellent goals, clement for winning and converting the penalty and david for capping off a midfield general display with your goal. well done also to the players who have created the goals.
congrats to kenneth ferdinand for unanimously winning the man-of-the-match award.

it was good to see leonard make his outfield debut at right back and yong kia in centre midfield, myint and weiliang for sacrificing their preferred positions for the team, tommy for inspiring confidence from the back, davin and clement for being back in the team, jacob for proving that's he's not just good with the ball, he's also good in getting into key positions, sam and jem for having good touches, lester for running himself ragged and henry for excelling in his RB position. let's also be praying that cornelius will recover soon from his knee injury.

as for me, i am delighted to be back in the team.
this match couldn't have gone better.

i look forward to the game this sunday against faith assembly.
venue to be confirmed.
kick off 4pm. reporting time 3:30pm. pls be punctual.
win, lose or draw, we have emerged victorious as a team.

i look forward to leading the team out again.
i will always be grateful for this team. 8 great years. and another one this year.
it is indeed an honour and privilege to be your captain.

we have started the year well.
let's put our best foot forward (pun intended) for the upcoming games.

last but not least, it feels great to finally be on the winning side. =)

To:
Leaders of teamr-age,

as I told some of the leaders present today, I am opening this account to all the leaders.
Namely: myself, Lester, Whei Jie, Kenneth, Jeremy Ng, Eugene Ang, David and Myint. Of cus, Joey too.
(i have sent u all the email with the "confidential" userid and password.... hhahahaha.... so check ur mails)

So anyway, 9 of us in total.

Basically, some HOUSE-RULES, u can post things on this blog. There are no limits to what u can post, but as leaders and mature adults, pls blog responsibly. I know you all can! =)

For starters, just some suggestions…. can post team or soccer related and appropriate things… or as leaders, u can share good things happening to u the past week? u know lah…. Haha.. =)

for now, can JOEY pls post the post-match info, like scorers, team sheet, sub… etc… we talked about before those…. This is to prevent several posts going up together.

Of cus, if someone wants to be our official “post-match news” blogger, pls inform and liaise with Joey, I am sure he appreciates this.

Lastly, I also wish to encourage the ALL LEADERS to blog about their group members, funny happenings and mostly anything under the sun about them? =)

The time we spend together on the pitch is really limited. And it is Joey’s as well as many others’ dream for the team to be “more” than a football team. Be a support group for one another, young and old. And so I hope thru this blog, it may be the first step and help us know a little bit more about the guys we are playing with, week-in, week-out.

Cheers… best Right-Back in the world... ahahhaa……

Focus more on the good times, less on the bad times. Afterall, this is life, inevitablly, sometimes its good, sometimes its not so good. But with a
positive outlook and approach to life, then maybe life seems better
afterall.

Leaders:

1. Please make sure you get an answer from your memebers before
Thursday 2359 so that you can get back to me by then. You may have to
call them to get an answer on time.

2. Please make sure your members bring $2 each. I will collect the
total amount for each group from the leaders. Whether or not they pay
you on the spot or another time,i will still collect it from you. It
is your duty to chase them for the money. "Willing to play but not
willing to pay,how can?" Beg or borrow,i don't care,just don't steal! =p

3. Please make sure they come on time, like i said,3.30pm,you may want
to inform them to be there by 315pm to ensure they won't come later
than 3.30pm. IT WILL APPLY,those that arrive later than 3.30pm WILL
NOT START.

4. Please make sure your group brings at least one soccer ball each!
If your current group isn't holding on to any soccer balls, please let
Henry know,he has 4 or 5 soccer balls with him at home.

Thank you for everything leaders! It is greatly appreciated! Things
can and will run smoothly if all these little details can be sorted
out. We have to start somewhere,if a match will help boost the team,so
be it,let us just try not to solely depend on matches alone. "As
leaders,if it doesn't start from you,then who?"

Playing alongside,
-Lester- #11
Match this Sunday!

Dearest Team,

WHY AIN'T ANYONE RESPONDING WHATESOEVER??? At least show you're still
alive? A simple "Got it!" would be fine. =)

Regarding this issue,i'd like to clarify something with everyone, both
leaders and members. When any information is sent out or is required
to be sent out,the only way for any of us to know whether the other
party has recieved it,is by getting a response.

When whoever is planning a training session or a match,he will send
out a mail through the Yahoo Groups.

Leaders, upon recieving the mail, please READ IT FULLY,then respond
accordingly,. Replying through the Yahoo Groups is perfectly
fine, however,PLESE PLEASE PLEASE make sure the one organizing
responds,if he does not respond,it obviously means he hasn't taken
note of what YOU have replied to. When such a situation occurs, find a
different method to reach him, either by sms or the best, call him
straight,so as to avoid any miscommunication.

Members, please reply your leaders when they pass on information to
you,be it regarding attendance or other issues,a simple sms will do,so
long as they get a response from you, that's fine.

If the team can keep to this, things will run much more smoothly as
well as organized. If individual group members respond to their
leaders on time, the leaders can then respond to the one organizing
training or match on time. Similarly, once members and leaders respond
on time, the one organizing will only then be able to give out
finalized details on time,so as to assist each of our
pre-training/match preparation. =)

FINALLY,more details on this Sunday's match.

Leonard Tan
Leonard, (born 11t March 1989), is a amateur Singaporean footballer, who plays for TeamR-age.

TeamR-age
Leonard's career with TeamR-age started in 2002, at the tender age of 13. Before this time, Leonard was already looking to play regularly. His cousin, Nigel, aware of Leonard's desire to play more regular football, urged the talented youngster to attend the open-trials for TeamR-age. No surprises, he made the grade. However, due to the lack of quality and back-up in the goalkeeping department back then, he was deployed as a goalkeeper. Leonard made his TeamR-age debut in the same year. And has been fielded in that position since. However, 5 years on, after having made more than half-a-century of appearances guarding the goal, Leonard now seeks a new challenge. He intents and is determine to re-invent himself as an out-field player (right back). Admittedly, such a transition may be challenging even for the best players. But with Leonard, given the commitment and determination he has shown over the past few seasons, this will certainly not be one mountain too high for him to climb. His career will be followed with great interest.

Trivia
Leonard: I used to hate arsenal and thought Wenger was the devil. But now i
kinda like them.

aiyo y only a few of us toking only? where are the others? talk rubbish also can show some interest in our team discussion ......

forgot what is the feeling,to lose a match and get hype up for the next match. hey team, let get together again , feel the team spirit.

- Wei Liang (07 March 2007)
"To answer my view about loyalty of players, I think its simply about not
giving up to improve for the team. Attendance for trainings and matches
itself is not enough to show you are loyal. Its about making
self-improvement on the field for the team. I'd think a person is very
loyal to the team when he fights hard and grit his teeth to get into the
first 11 by improving himself on the pitch in trainings or matches, and not
those who ll give up halfway because they feel that they just cant break
into the first team."

Hey guys, I found this post on David's blog and I thought that its very inspirational... so enjoy!!!

My life fulfilling trip
Alrightey…my first blog…haha I‘m never really a fan of blogging but I just wanna share a little something to all of my friends…
I’ve just came back from my 3D2N Bali trip. On the last day of the trip, as I was waiting for my tour bus to pick me up from my hotel to the airport. I had a bit a time to go to the beach to enjoy the sea breeze for the last time, well at least for sometime to come….
So there I was, laying flat with my sunny on, looking at the waves roaring to the shore and enjoying the oncoming breeze rushing in from the never ending oceanic view when I noticed a man sitting on the sandy shoreline diagonally in front of me with his back facing me. There he was, with his hat on, dressed simply in dark blue polo-t and accompanied by a rather ruggard and worn-out pair of long pants. There was a large wooden box, flipped open, on his lap. Inside it was full of necklaces, rings, earrings, etc… things that you can usually find in pasar malam stalls…And so I realised he was a small time trader who sells these stuffs…
Equipped with a cloth on one hand, he was wiping clean of all his products… This may be a common scene to some… but before long I found myself even more engrossed with this whole image. And I admit, I peeped through my sunny for quite sometime… At that time, it really gets me thinking… I mean look at this man, he might not be earning much, he may have to go some days trying to sell his jewels in vain, bcos it aint easy to earn considerable profits especially when you are selling “fake” stuffs while many will prefer having brandish ones around their necks or wrists…. Not to mention on how far customers will actually push the limit of bargainings for these “lower” quality goods…But there he was, polishing them, not just ignorant polishing though. He was very diligent in wiping clean every of his stuffs and displaying them nicely on his wooden box… making sure that his products are sparkling clean and neat, hoping to entice more customers…
He might not be earning millions of profits per day, but I can see that he really takes a lot of pride in the thing he does… When he was finished with the cleaning, which easily took him about an hour or so… (cos that was how long I spent laying beat there)…he got up, wearing a big smile on his face, carried his stuffs and approached nearby tourists,... back to having a shot again to attracting them to buy his products by painstakingly trying to communicate in English with them….
Until now I still can’t shake off this live image from my head… I realise even more that life isn’t all about work, money making, big houses, sweet looking cars, blah, blah, blah… Life is more about the simple things we usually take for granted…the things that we are surrounded with and the people that we are blessed with…
If we take pride with everything we do in life, we’ll then find satisfaction and fulfilment of this so often called “sucky life”….
As for me, that very moment was when I started to treasure more the soothing sound of the onrushing waves, the inland gushing winds, to try and breathe in as much fresh ocean air as possible to cleanse my lungs =P
Cos I know not everyday that I can have the privilege to lay dead and be carefree =D
Life aint that bad afterall eh…
A Good Life ain’t there to be achieved… It is already there, laying in wait for each one of us to be able to see it…

TeamR-age
Jian Wen's special talent as a footballer caught the eye of then team manager, Joey Tan. He played primarily as a winger on both flanks. Jian Wen's amateur career began when he was offered a contract with TeamR-age in 2001. He was 12 years old. Although comparatively smaller built compared to his peers, he shown tremendous heart in his football, often taking on players twice his size in trainings. Deservingly, a year later, he made his first team appearence in 2002 at the age of 13. Since then, he has established himself as a regular squad player. At present (2007), given he is still only 18 years young and fast gaining experience, this is definitely a future star in the making.
